Nice to see people giving Nick Beggs a shout.
My extra vote goes to Pino Pallidino. |

I also taught myself how to play by playing along to It Bites all those years ago; I also played clarinet & sax at the time and used to play in various wind bands and jazz bands, so I also used to play bass along to classical music and jazz. But Dick for sure, is one of my bass heroes.
Another great bass player is Doug Wimbish from Living Colour.
At great risk of being shot down in flames, I also played along to Simple Minds for years (this doesn't impress John Beck at all!!) and they went through a few different bass players but all pretty handy in their own ways. |
Hi Moo
U R spot on about Nick Beggs, whilst his band were a little "dodgy" he provided credibility in a weird way.
How the heck did you manage to play clarinet and sax at the same time - I hope to god the musicians union doesn't get to hear about you Moo!!
Living Color (US spelling!) are mega and Doug is a great bassisterist.
Can't fault you playing along with Simple Minds, when I first started tub bashing I played along with them all Zep, Queen, Sabbath, Genesis.................................
I don't know why John M has a problem with Simple Minds - his style always reminds me of Charlie Burchill! (Just joking JM!!!)

PS If Charlie is a member of the forum I DO actually like you and your band! No I really do!! |

Yeah, again, Pino, quality player and one reason I love fretless.
One I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet is that dude from Level 42 who's brother Nathan played for Frank at the end of last year!! Both excellent bass players.
Bonzo, 'tis true - playing bass, clarinet & sax at the same time is no mean feat but being in a musical circus, I had no choice
It isn't John M who bo**ocks me for liking Simple Minds, it's Mr Beck!!
Here's another great bass player - not always my cup of tea but a great player all the same - Stu Zender who played on all the early JamieRotway stuff. _________________ Bass, Beer & Curry!! |

Mike Rutherford - that is, before he took over lead guitar duties...
Also played a mean set of Taurus bass pedals! |

Hey Bonz!
Yep, the Hughesmeister is awesome! Although I love the Purps mk2, I must admit that the Coverdale/Hughes lineup is a guilty pleasure . 'Come Taste The Band' is right up there in my fave list. Two amazing singers in one band - not often you get that, plus he wore some incredible white flared suits !! He still looks cool even though he must be about 72 .
Talking about basserists, what about the man Kerrang! called "A small man, with a big bass guitar", Burke Shelley, from the brilliant Budgie!! Fantastic band, (the first band I ever saw) and seriously good bassist! Great song titles too....

Not particularly into or knowledgeable about bassists myself, but would Matt Pegg be worthy of a mention in this section?
I like alot of his playing on the Hometown live album. _________________ What's wrong with being sexy? |

Hi Mule
Really agree with the Coverdal/Hughes view, you tried Hughes/Thrall?
Burke Shelley/Budgie ace - they had some great song titles - Breadfan, In the grip of the typefitters hand etc etc

Simple Minds - Derek Forbes - ACE! One of the few bass players I've ever seen that combined pick-playing with a bit of 'slap/pull' style -- see "The American". My top SM track (bass-wise) would be "Glittering Prize", with that wonderful bassline with the little slur in it. My other personal top-ten, in no particular order...
1. Chris Squire -- overall a consumate musician, great bass-player, singer, composer, I love all his stuff. Best albums are "relayer" and CTTE i would say.Oh, and Fish out of Water.
2. Geddy Lee
3. Nick Beggs
4. Charlie Tumahai (Be Bop Deluxe) - bass, backing vox, what a guy. A sad loss.
5.JPJ
6. Tony Butler (from 'big country')
7. Pino Palladino (those Paul Young albums!!!)
8. John Wetton
9. Greg Lake
10. John Deacon (a bit of a 'dick nolan' i reckon -- not flash but totally steady and supporting the band.
Bass is truly the Lord's Instrument. I jus wish I could afford a Rickenbacker...
