Any thoughts on the latest offering from Marillion anyone? Personally I'm a bit disappointed, it seems a bit of a bland and uninspired affair to me. Some good moments, but overall an album more akin to the likes of Radiation and marillion.com than the excellence of Marbles, This Strange Engine etc.

I agree with you Dave. But it's one that can sound good on stage. I see them next week, I'll tell you.
Favourite Marillion albums : Clutching at straws / Marbles !!

Now this is where we'll differ, I liked .com and Radiation but I really don't get on with Marbles...at least not the retail version. A couple of good tracks, but it all seemed a bit too 'up itself' to me, and Hogarth sounded like he'd got a mouthful of marbles when he recorded most of the vocals Very Happy .

So, I appoached SE with trepidation. To be honest, this was the first Marillion album I didn't buy either on it's day of release or even earlier (in these internet days). In short, I wanted to hear it beofre I shelled out on it. To be honest, I like it a whole lot better than Marbles. I can see what you mean about it being more like the .com/Radiation style, maybe a bit 'TSE' too.

So for me, though some of it misses me by a country mile ('Most Toys' is frankly appaling!!!), it a definite return to form.

So far I'm liking it, and although it might take a while to fully appreciate it, I'm not hearing any of the classic quality that will make me play it in a few years...
From TSE onwards there have been gradually fewer songs on each album that I would include in a best of compilation.

On SWE I was hoping for a couple of future classics like Afraid of Sunlight, Easter etc but I'm just hearing lots of very good but not outstanding songs.

I would turn up the vocals a little though - h seems just a tiny bit too mumbly on several songs.

Reading the above makes me feel a lot better! I'd been reading a number of fan reviews saying that this was their best ever album etc but after 3 listens, it's still not working for me. I also felt it was a return to the 'wilderness years' of Radiation & .com - not a good move in my book!

Maybe I've been spoilt in the last few weeks with some excellent new releases with a lot of bite (Threshold, Porcupine Tree, Steve Thorne, etc) but this is bland!

Still, I'll keep listening in the hope that it is a grower... Confused
