I have to say that all 5 albums are top quality and it's very hard to rank them. Having said that:
Once Around The World
The Tall Ships
The Big Lad In The Windmill
Map Of The Past
Eat Me In St. Louis
As for top songs: the only poor song for me is Murder Of The Planet Earth
Once Around The World
The Tall Ships
Memory Of Water
Whole New World
Yellow Christian
Never Go To Heaven
The Wind That Shakes The Barley
Old Man And The Angel
Underneath Your Pillow
Meadow And The Stream |

This is today's order for me (subject to change, naturally) -
1. The Tall Ships
2. Once Around The World
3. Big Lad
4. Eat Me
5. Map |
Ok, today I had a long car drive so I decided to take EMISL and MOTP to have a "play-off" and perhaps reassess both albums. MOTP went on first, and I played the whole thing. V enjoyable, consistent and full of interesting moments, if perhaps no massive stand-outs for me. EMISL next, and immediately I was struck by the same things that hit me in 1989 - big drums, shoutier singing and quite a few songs I struggled to get through. I really like the vocal harmonies, though, and Underneath Your Pillow and Ice Melts are still 2 of my favourite IB tracks.
So I need to re-order the albums. In addition, I think I'll switch the top 2 around today. So here we go:
1 Once Around The World
2 The Tall Ships
3 Big Lad
4 Map
5 Eat Me

Nice list! Coincidentally I've been revisiting Big Lad during my (boring) daily commute. The production still strikes me very much as of its time, but the choons are top. All In Red is always a stand-out for me, as is You'll Never Go To Heaven.
I have to agree with you about EMISL, Nitsypee; it's not my fave album by any stretch but there are a couple of gems on there. Underneath Your Pillow played live is a sublime experience.
If I had to pick my top five albums right now, they'd go something as follows:
1. Once Around the World
2. Map of the Past
3. The Tall Ships
4. Big Lad
5. EMISL _________________ Innit. |
