I know world class bands like Rush or U2 have never really included keyboards as part of the band line-up or put as much emphasis on it.
I do feel that the keyboard player is an intrinsic part of the band. There is so much rhythm section in music (which is really good...needful...flavoursome) and yet keyboards do much to add to the harmonic pulse within the music. Well, I think of Genesis, ELP, Camel, Yes, Floyd, The Flower Kings and of course It Bites... ...

Couldn't agree more - but then I'm a little biased...

Actually, I think Squire's bass is the defining predominant 'sound texture' of classic Yes ... but that's just my humble opinion.
Conversely, it sure ticks me when I hear that rotosound twang being ponderous and presumptive in modern clone-prog. That's just my humble opinion too.
And I'm not even a bass player .

I'll give you Yes, yes...
For me, though, any band that actually uses what keyboards can bring is worth a listen.

I find it very hard to listen to or watch any band that doesnt inclued keyboards...and i am biased. For me,they add texture and depth and open up so so many doors musically with keys rather than without. How many prog bands do you know that haven't got a keyboard player.Say no more. |
